School at 31: Nurturing Educational Dreams

At age four, a severe fever took away Phool Jahan’s eyesight. Growing up in a large family with limited means, she watched from the sidelines as her twelve siblings went to school while she remained at home, the chance for corrective surgery slipping away due to financial constraints.

Life changed in 2018 when Phool Jahan, now thirty-one and married to a daily wage laborer in Thane, Maharashtra, discovered Radio Udaan and Hamari Vaani. These platforms opened up a world she never knew existed – one filled with resources and information tailored for people with visual impairments. Through these channels, she found her way to the Eyeway Helpdesk while seeking information about disability pension.

Her conversation with the Eyeway counsellor revealed unexpected possibilities. Open schooling could offer her the education she’d missed out on all these years. With access to the National Association for Blind’s Talking Library, Phool Jahan began preparing for her Class X examinations, diving into formal education for the first time in her life.

When a deadline for examination fees threatened to halt her progress in January, Eyeway stepped in with timely financial support, ensuring her year of hard work wouldn’t go to waste. Today, Phool Jahan continues her studies, working toward Class XII while setting her sights on government examinations. The Eyeway team connects her with specialized coaching institutes, supporting her journey from basic education to career aspirations.
