Once Deemed Useless by Society, Now on the Path to Success

Sahil Singh, a 22-year-old from Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, was born blind into a farming family. As the eldest of four siblings, he grew up in a community where no one had ever encountered a blind person before. His family, unaware of available resources, kept him at home, depriving him of education. Mainstream schools refused to admit him, and for 17 years, he lived in isolation, deemed as “useless” by society.

A chance encounter with an Eyeway radio promo changed his life. Hesitant but determined, Sahil contacted an Eyeway counsellor, who patiently guided him, building a connection with him despite his stammering difficulties. Understanding that Sahil was comfortable with Punjabi, the counsellor advised him to complete his 10th and 12th through the Punjab Board and arranged for his stay at a blind hostel in Amritsar.

Sahil, who had always been passionate about studying, used recorded study materials to complete his exams successfully. The counsellor further motivated him to prepare for competitive government exams, setting him on the path to a secure future. Recognising his academic potential, the counsellor then encouraged Sahil to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree from Delhi University’s distance learning program, providing vital information on admissions and fees.

Beyond academics, Eyeway ensured Sahil could travel independently by assisting him in obtaining offline and online railway concession cards. Over time, the counsellor became Sahil’s most trusted guide, offering continuous support and ensuring he made informed decisions about his future.

Because of Eyeway’s intervention, Sahil gained access to education, government benefits, and essential mobility resources, paving the way for self-reliance and independence. His journey is a powerful testament to how timely information and dedicated support can empower visually impaired individuals to break societal barriers and lead fulfilling lives.
